Cardi B reveals the reason WAP wasn’t nominated for a Grammy
But for such a big song, it was noticeably absent from the 2021 Grammy Awards nominations list, which was released this week. Even if it wasn’t tapped for song of the year, surely it should be included for Best Rap Performance or Best Duo.
Cardi B has set the record straight, saying that she didn’t even submit the song to be nominated, because she wants to wait until the rest of her album is released.
In an Instagram Live video, she said that if she “was pressed for a Grammy I would’ve submitted ‘WAP’ for this year and I didn’t submit it. I didn’t want to be submitted to award shows until I put out my album because I think my album is so good.”
“I never pressed for a Grammy, but y’all not gonna take away something that I know I worked my *ss off [for], that I deserve,” she added,
‘WAP’ is the lead single from Cardi’s upcoming second album, for which she has not yet set a release date.
She went on, teasing that the album “means something and I worked on it a lot. I’ve been working on it for almost two years. And some songs are just so emotional to me because I did them during quarantine.”
Cardi won Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammys for her debut album Invasion of Privacy.
Her ‘WAP’ collaborator, Megan Thee Stallion, was nominated for four awards at the upcoming Grammys: Record of the Year, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for ‘Savage’, and Best New Artist.
