What happened to the feral kid from Mad Max 2?
It’s been nearly four decades since the Mad Max sequel, The Road Warrior, hit cinemas back in 1981, but it’s still as beloved as any Aussie classic.
Though Mel Gibson was the undeniable star of the franchise, the character who captivated out attention was the small, boomerang-wielding unnamed Feral Kid who lives in the wasteland and communicates only in grunts.
So what happens to a child actor when they play such a recognisable role? Read on to find out what happened to The Feral Kid we all grew to love.
What happened to the feral kid from Mad Max?
When Emil Minty played The Feral Kid in Max Max 2: The Road Warrior, he was just seven years old. Now, he’s 48.
Though he’s a memorable part of the movie, he never actually had any lines.
After starring in the 1981 cult classic, the Aussie actor picked up a handful of other roles. In 1982 he had a minor part in the film Fluteman, and one in The Winds of Jarrah the following year.
In 1990, when he was 16, he appeared in a few episodes of iconic Aussie TV show A Country Practice.
What does the feral kid look like now?
Emil Minty recently spoke on-camera about his experience on Mad Max.
He revealed that he hadn’t seen the original Mad Max film until he was cast in its sequel. He says that they filmed the movie out in Broken Hill for three months in 1980.
Minty says that George Miller, the film’s director, is a genius who was really able to get a lot out of the actors on set. “He’s a mastermind at getting out of actors what he envisioned and what he saw.”
Back in 2015, he told a great story about how he landed the role, by coming up with an elaborate back story for his character.
“My story was that my mum, dad and I were flying, we ran out of fuel and landed; my father went to go find fuel, and did not return,” he said in an interview with Yahoo Movies. “My mother left to go find my father and she also never returned, which left me to fend for myself.”
Minty revealed that he also had a hand in designing his now-iconic fur-clad costume, which included Ugg boots covered in real animal skins.
The actor was almost banned from the Mad Max 2 premiere, because of its rating.
“We received a letter to inform me that I was unable to attend the premiere due to the film’s classification being R rated,” he said. Soon after, the film was reclassified to M, a new rating that allowed him to slip into the screening.
What is Emil Minty doing now?
Minty gave up acting after he finished high school, and he hasn’t starred in anything since.
He now has two kids and has worked as a jeweller in Sydney for 30 years. He says that he and his wife “live life like most ordinary families”.
